Battle is a small town and civil parish in the local government district of Rother in East Sussex. It lies 55 miles south-south-east of London, 32 miles east of Brighton and 24 miles east of Lewes. Also nearby are Hastings to the south-east and Bexhill-on-Sea to the south. It was the site of the Battle of Hastings, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II to become William I in 1066.
Battle sits within the designated High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) so, as you would imagine, the countryside is very picturesque all around.
The parish of Battle’s population is over 6,600 according to the 2011 census.
Battle has two senior schools, Claverham Community College is the local comprehensive situated on the outskirts of Battle. The College grounds incorporate land which belonged formerly to the Battle Abbey Estate and are immediately adjacent to the site of the Battle of Hastings and serves the educational needs of all children between the ages of 11 and 16 in Battle and the villages of Ashburnham, Catsfield, Crowhurst, Netherfield, Ninfield, Penhurst, Sedlescombe, Whatlington and Westfield.
Battle Abbey School is an independent coeducational day and boarding school with the senior school occupying part of the ruined abbey complex from which the school derives its name.
Rother District Council
Rother District Council is the most easterly authority in East Sussex and borders on Kent and is named after the River Rother which flows within its boundaries. Rother District Council offices are based in Bexhill-on-Sea with the district covering the area around it but not including Hastings. Rother covers some 200 square miles and is mainly rural except for Bexhill, Battle and Rye.
